  • A digital signature or ID is more commonly known as a digital certificate. To digitally sign an Office document, you must have a current (not expired) digital certificate. Digital certificates are typically issued by a certificate authority (CA), which is a trusted third-party entity that issues digital certificates for use by other parties.
  • Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) are the digital equivalent (that is electronic format) of physical or paper certificates. Few Examples of physical certificates are drivers’ licenses, passports or membership cards.

Digital Signature Certificates are issued by licensed Certifying Authorities under the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India as per the Information Technology Act.

There are three classes of digital signature certificates given by the certifying authorities.

Class 1 digital signature certificates are given to individuals and private people

Class 2 digital signature certificates are given to both business people and individuals. Alongside Email Ids and Name, it additionally investigates different details and builds up their veracity with the client’s data as given under the CA data set. The primary capacity of this certificate is to verify the details of the signer.

Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) provides the highest level of assurance or trust within the RCAI hierarchy setup of Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) in India. which is mainly used for e procurement and e tendering. Digital Signature Certificate Class 3 are issued to Individuals or Organizations.

How to apply for DSC?

  • Now under the ‘Digital Certification Services’ section, click on the type of entity for which you want to obtain the DSC:’ individual or organization’, etc. In case you are applying for an individual DSC, click on ‘individual’. A new tab containing the DSC Registration Form will appear. Download the DSC Registration Form on your PC.
